چکیده

The tensile elastic modulus Et of a rock is different from the compressive elastic modulus Ec, due to inhomogeneity and microcracks. There is no convenient method to obtain Et except using direct tension tests. However, the direct tension test for rock materials is difficult to perform, because of stress concentrations, and the difficulty of preparing specimens. We have developed a new method to determine Et of rock materials easily and conveniently. Two strain gauges are pasted at the center part of a Brazilian disc’s two side faces along the direction perpendicular to the line load to record tensile strain, and a force sensor is used to record the force applied; then the stress–strain curve can be obtained; finally the Et can be calculated according to those related formulas which are derived on the basis of elasticity theory. Our experimental results for marble, sandstone, limestone and granite indicate that Et is less than Ec, and their ratio is generally between 0.6 and 0.9. & 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Design of an Elastic Arthroplastic Disc Optimized under Different Loads

Introduction: Due to limitations of current treatments for degenerative disc disease, arthroplastic methods to repair the diseased disc have been proposed. The artificial disc is a mobile implant for degenerative disc replacement that attempts to lessen the degeneration of the adjacent elements following interbody fusion procedures. Because the success of artificial disc replacement depends on ...

Determination of Tensile Strength and Crack Growth of a Typical Polymer Concrete Using Circular Disc Samples

Cracked and un-cracked Brazilian disc specimens subjected to diametral compression were used for conducting fracture toughness and tensile strength experiments on a polymer concrete (PC) material. The value of mode I fracture toughness (KIc) was determined from the center- cracked Brazilian disc and the indirect tensile strength (σt) was obtained from the un-cracked Brazilian disc specimen. The...

Sliding Wear Behaviour of Walnut Shell Powder Filled Vinyl Ester/ WSP Green Composites

Polyvinyl ester green composites were synthesized with walnut shell powder (WSP) by in-situ polymerization technique. The green composites have been evaluated for mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus and hardness. Sliding wear loss, specific wear rate and coefficient of friction were investigated by using computerized pin-on–disc machine at normal applied loads of 20,...

Analytical Solution for Stress Field and Intensity Factor in CSTBD under Mixed Mode Conditions

Considering the fact that rocks fail faster under tensile stress, rock tensile strength is of greatimportance in applications such as blasting, rock fragmentation, slope stability, hydraulic fracturing, caprock integrity, and geothermal energy extraction. There are two direct and indirect methods tomeasure tensile strength. Since direct methods always encompass difficulties in test setup, indire...
